Speed Dating is a dynamic discussion strategy that supports students to analyze texts and respond to the ideas of others. To set up an initial Speed Dating exercise during class, teachers should prepare a series of questions related to an individual text or text set. Students can later be coached into writing their own questions based on the reading.
Teachers should distribute one question to each student and allow the students time to answer the question in writing. The room should be structured as a typical “Speed Dating” venue, with two rows of desks or tables facing each other, and each student facing another student.

If students used invented people, they can give their impressions of personality, and see if the adjectives they use match what was written on the card. Plus, they can say who they think is the best match for them as a friend, based on hobbies, personality, likes and dislikes. If you wish, they could also do the above as a written activity, as a message to a friend describing how the speed dating went.
This is a particularly good idea when your target language is reported speech. After 15 years in the classroom, I have some thoughts about ice-breaker activities:. And so, it turns out that the social risk is high and the social reward is low. Additionally, too often the person leading the activity has not thought through the point of the activity and how it fits into the course. And going around the room talking about what you are studying or what you ate for dinner last night is boring.
No one cares. In some ways, I think a bad icebreaker leaves the impression that the course will be unengaging and unimportant. Still, the ice-breaker is widely used because it is important. Spending all of our time on the first day of class merely reading through the syllabus, or worse, dismissing students early with no meaningful learning experience or connection to the course, is a missed opportunity.
So, it is my opinion that we should be looking for high quality ice-breakers that check many of the boxes that we hope to accomplish on the first day of class. This activity seems to work for me and my students are surprised by how much fun they have at it. A couple of things that this activity has going for it is that it is fast-paced and it touches on things that students are genuinely interested in and can easily share.
It also reminds students that they are interesting and have something valuable to contribute! To set this up, I have my ish students get into pairs and stand across from one another in two lines of

This is the first in a series of three posts about activities I usually do on the first days of class. The main objective is to get students speaking and assess their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, as well as giving them an idea of what is expected of them for the rest of the year. Single men and women attend an event, usually in a bar or a club. During the event, they will have the opportunity to meet a series of potential partners. As the term speed-dating suggests, they only have three minutes to impress each person before rotating to the next.
In the classroom we do the same but eliminate the romantic part! So basically they have three minutes or any other time limit you wish to establish to speak to one person before moving on to the next. This technique works wonders on the first day as it breaks the ice just perfectly.
