Looking for Love: Pet-Centric Dating Sites

In the past, I had been quite critical of relationships amongst veterinary students. The idea of dating within the veterinary class seemed quite risky and destined for failure. This was because I had the misconception that two people undergoing the stresses of such a laborious program would be unable to have a healthy, balanced relationship. As first-year, and then second-year progressed, relationships began to form within my class and between other classes.

Most started out subtly and became more public as the relationships strengthened.

I knew I would have to broach this subject at some point since it seems to be one of the top concerns for single women entering vet school. I tend to keep that part of my life very private — even from classmates — so as to avoid gossip, drama, etc all of which I avoid like the plague. That being said, I recognize that dating in vet school is a hot topic hence the Part One in the headline , so I will attempt to address dating in vet school more generally, offering advice whenever possible.

It is possible to date or start a relationship during vet school, it is just slightly more difficult. In my opinion, a partner who is aware of and is understanding of the demands your course load is imperative, above and beyond any other traits. I also believe that a partner who can support you and keep you focused on your work as opposed to constantly distracting you from it is crucial. In fact, I have heard many of my classmates complain about how there are no opportunities to meet guys while in vet school or how few guys there are in Davis.

I would like to argue that these girls have the wrong tactics. Like I said before, I would prefer to keep my own romantic life out of this, but suffice it to say, I have dated various guys while in vet school. While I am in no way a person who is out at bars and clubs until the wee hours of the morning, I have been able to meet a plethora of guys outside of vet school.

Given my experience, here is my advice my apologies if some of this may be reminiscent of articles that appear in Cosmo or similar magazines :.

If you’ve got good science and math skills and an interest in helping animals, follow your dream. Who better to help you than the people who’ve already been there? So, what if your grades are good but not great? Does that mean you’ve got no chance? No, it doesn’t.

Veterinary schools are looking for well-rounded students. They’re looking for future leaders. You can make yourself a better candidate by getting good or great grades as well as experience and leadership skills. That said, check out your school’s undergraduate catalog for courses that aren’t on the vet school prerequisite list but might be good courses to give you a “leg up” and better prepare you for the coursework you’ll have in vet school.

It’s possible that taking these courses as an undergrad can make the comparable vet school classes much less stressful for you because you’ve already got a good foundation in that subject. Volunteering or working for a veterinarian is very important. Not only does it expose you to your potential career so you know what you’re getting into, so to speak , but it also might provide a good recommendation for you from the veterinarian.
